A raw casting reaches the inspection room and joins the queue for the CMM. Programming, fixturing, datum setup and point-by-point probing can occupy the machine for an hour or two on a complex housing or pump body, and by the time the first-article report is signed the moulding line has changed patterns and the grinding and welding hours have already gone into a part that may be out of tolerance. The delay is rarely about measuring accuracy. Inspection has become a gate the part must detour through, rather than a step performed inside the process.
Mounting the sensor on a robot flange moves that gate next to the line. A robot carries a 3D scanning head around the casting, captures each view in seconds, and stitches the point clouds into a complete surface that is compared against the CAD model to produce a colour deviation map and a table of critical dimensions. Scanning returns whole surfaces instead of a handful of points, so mismatch, uneven wall thickness and residual gates surface alongside the nominal dimensions. Truman Robotics builds these cells around high-accuracy robots with blue-light scanners or laser profile sensors, sealed and thermally managed for foundry dust, vibration and stray light, so the unit can stand beside the fettling station instead of waiting inside a temperature-controlled metrology room.
The data only pays off once it reaches the next operation. Sending first-article scans to a grinding cell lets the robot adjust its path, taking an extra pass where stock is heavy and keeping clear where it is thin, which cuts over-grinding and scrap. Accumulated batch data exposes dimensional drift days before a batch runs out of tolerance, giving process engineers time to correct the pattern or the pouring parameters instead of tracing a complaint backwards. Truman supplies welding, grinding, blasting, painting and inspection cells and knows what these stations need to exchange, so the inspection unit acts as the eye of the line rather than a standalone instrument. If first-article queues or variable stock are costing you hours, send us your drawings and inspection items and we will plan a robotic inspection cell around your takt time.
